1. Declining level of groundwater
Groundwater has been tapped excessively in the middle region. The groundwater level has been falling and the aquifer is drying up gradually. The quality of groundwater has been steadily deteriorating. For example, because groundwater along the coasts of the Hunhe and Taizihe rivers has been heavily tapped, the groundwater level has declined annually.
In Shenyang city, excess extraction of groundwater per day has reached 200,000 tons. The area of pumping is 250 km2.
The pumping depth in the city center is now 25-37 metres.
