VIII. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
[ VIII-A | VIII-B | VIII-C | VIII-D | VIII-E | VIII-F | VIII-G | VIII-H ]
E. Multilateral trade and international environmental agreements, and domestic environmental policies
Tonga is a party to several multilateral trade agreements and has acceded to a number of international environmental agreements.
Although the visible, practical implications for the country, in terms of the environment, are still negligible, such affiliations should yield benefits to Tonga.
In any case, in the long term Tonga will be forced by circumstances and the international community, especially aid donors, to give more serious attention to the environment, and to abide by the terms and conditions of environmental treaties.
Membership of regional and international environmental organizations such as SPREP has benefited Tonga through access to training opportunities and technical expertise.
Recommendation
It is recommended that:
- Tonga take full advantage, as far as possible, of those international trade and environmental treaties to which it is a party.
