II. THE ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEM IN SHANGHAI
B. The network of environmental monitoring
Environmental radioactivity monitoring detects the radioactivity in the air, surface water, soil and biological features. Since 1994, air monitoring sites have been set up at Yishan Road and Zhujing Town; surface water monitoring sites are at the Dianshan Lake, the Bund, the estuary of the Huangpu River, the reservoir of Baosteel Company, and the East China Sea. Tap water also receives monitoring; Soil sites are at the Dianshan Lake, the Chengqiao in Jiading District and Yishan Road. Two biological samples are collected from Chengqiao and Zhuging Town - green vegetable and black carp. The variables of air monitoring are total B radioactivity in air sol sampled once a month between 8:00-10:00 and 1.2m above the ground, tritium concentration sampled seasonally and the absorption ratio of air sampled monthly.
The variables of surface water monitoring include U-238, Th-232, Ra-226, Sr-90, Cs-137, H-3 which are sampled three times a year in the rainy, regular and dry seasons.
The variables of soil monitoring include U-238, Th-232, Ra-226, K-40, Sr-90, Cs-137, total a and B which are sampled once a year during March and May.
The variables of bio-monitoring include U-238, Th-232, Ra-226, K-40, Sr-90, Cs-137 and total B.
