C. Study approach

With a view to introducing an overall picture of flood loss reduction in Bangladesh together with important features of the related economic decision-making process to the readers, a brief description of physiographic, hydraulic, morphological features, flooding process and ecological resources are presented together with the socio-economic situation and the effects of flood hazards on economic growth and social conditions. Flood loss reduction measures and past experiences, including examples of three successful and four unsuccessful projects, are subsequently analyzed to form a framework to review past and existing practices in integration of environmental concerns into economic decision-making in the country. The findings from these analyses form the basis for conclusions and recommendations for further improvement.
