B. Background of present study
The study on 'Flood Loss Reduction in Bangladesh' was carried out by the Institute of Flood Control and Drainage Research (IFCDR) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) at the request of the Development Research and Policy Analysis Division of ESCAP. The study aims to present useful examples of environmental impact assessment methodologies on flood loss reduction measures in Bangladesh which could be used as a guide to the development of similar methodologies in the environmental impact assessment of such flood prevention measures in other countries. The study is also expected to evaluate the impact of main flood reduction measures on development planning and economic decision-making.
The study was conducted mainly on the basis of the enormous published information generated through field and analytical investigations carried out under the Flood Action Plan (FAP) programme during 1990 to 1995 and a recent study entitled 'Flood Control in a Floodplain Country: Experiences of Bangladesh' completed in October 1996 at IFCDR. In addition, numerous other reports which have been consulted.
