Time:   13:00 - 16:00
Venue:   IT Learning Lab, UNESCAP Learning Centre
Facilitator:   Professor Yong Yoon Assistant Dean and Chairperson of Ph.D. Program in Economics, Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand
Target audience:   Staff members interested in working with data more effectively and in enhancing their skills to perform quantitative and statistical analyses

An introduction to STATA:

What is STATA?
STATA is a user-friendly statistical software programme that offers a broad range tools for data management and statistical analysis. Learning how to use STATA should be, in practical terms, invaluable for ESCAP's staff whose work is related to the statistical analysis of data. This course is aimed at the first-time user of STATA to provide practical knowledge and understanding of the basics of STATA.

Objectives:
After successfully completing this introductory STATA session (three 1/2-day training modules), which will include real data examples and an independent project, participants will be able to read and reorganize datasets as well as carry out simple analysis and construct useful tables and graphs often used in reports.

Topics:
Day 1: Introduction to STATA
  • Overview of STATA
  • Getting help and updates
  • Understanding STATA’s command syntax
  • Running STATA interactively and in batch mode (i.e. do-file)
  • Saving results output in a log-file
  • Getting data into STATA (reading ASCII data (infile and insheet) and importing data from other sources)
  • Getting summary statistics (including r-class variables)
  • Brief introduction to linear regression (OLS)
  • Introduction to graphs in STATA
Day 2: Data management using STATA
  • Accessing World Bank data
  • Variable types and names
  • Dealing with string variables and dates in STATA
  • Observation subscripts _n and _N
  • Combining data sets (append and merge)
  • Reshaping data (wide versus long data)
  • Generating/replacing/labeling/deleting variables
  • Renaming/reordering/sorting variables
  • Creating categorical variables
  • Some simple programming tools for saving time
  • Memory management
Day 3: Practice session
  • Participants will be assigned a project to be completed in small groups or individually with the objective of solidifying understanding of the topics covered in the previous two sessions.
