Welcome to New Staff Members

In light of supporting UNESCAP as a learning organisation, it was important to create a culture of sharing knowledge and experiences. While this is a requirement for staff at all levels and backgrounds, a major need existed to support new staff members’ integration. In 2005, the mentoring programme offered by OHRM was reinvigorated at UNESCAP, by identifying and offering a new pool of local mentors. In October 2005, a new buddy programme was launched for all new staff members, independent of their level. The buddy programme helps to familiarise new staff with the organisational culture and to establish informal cross-divisional as well as cross-sectional networks within the organisation. It is designed to match new staff with an informal contact point for all kinds of queries to assist with getting accustomed to the new work environment as well as to the new life environment in Bangkok. ODLU matches a staff member who has volunteered for being a buddy to new staff members based on the personal information provided, namely the professional level, the personal background, the preferred language as well as the expectations associated with a participation in the Buddy Programme.

Both programmes have worked very smoothly, and first feedback indicates a high degree of satisfaction and appreciation amongst new staff members.
