Session 1/2008:
Working with interpreters: the dynamics of communications
by Ms. Hong Jiang, ASD/Conference Services Section
Date: 25 January 2008
Time: 10.00 - 11.00 hrs
Venue: Seminar Room 2, UNESCAP Learning Centre
Summary of content:
While we have the luxury of interpreting services by professional interpreters at official UN conferences, this may not be the case when work is done on missions or in the field, in particular. Understanding the dynamics of tri-party process that involve the speaker, the listener and the interpreter can contribute to more effective communications. This involves the work process, the role of the interlocutors and their impact on each other. This understanding will also help to build up team work for the achievement of both the immediate communications objectives as well as those of the mission or projects.
This presentation will cover the following issues:
- The setting and process of communications with interpretation
- The role of the interlocutors and their inter-play with each other
- What you can do to make the most of interpretation services
