The Universal Coverage Policy of Thailand
An Introduction
Health expenditure in Thailand has dramatically increased since 1980 from 3.82% of GDP to 6.21% in 1998.  During this period the health expenditure per capita increased from 544.90 Baht in 1980 to 4662.83 Baht in 1998 (Thailand Health Profile 1997-1998). In the mean time, about 20 million or about 30% of the total 60 million Thai population remain uninsured. What should these people do when they are confronted with high cost care for their illness? Xingzhu Liu from China wins
Health Economics Essay Award
Nine contributions from all over Asia were the outcome of the Health Economics Essay Competition for WHO's 50th Anniversary. Mr. Xingzhu Liu from the Shandong Medical University in China was judged as the winner of this competition by an international review panel. He presented his 'Economic Study of Slide Taking Criteria of Malaria Case Detection in Shandong, China', at the first day of the forum, receiving congratulations from the forum participants.
