Forum, where they discussed ideas on how the public and private

Plenary I focused on “Strategies to overcome Impediments to development”. On the podium are Mr. Kim Hak-Su, UNESCAP Executive Secretary (centre right), Mr. Mahathir Mohamad, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia (centre left), Mr. Victor Fung, Group Chairman of Li & Fung Group, Mr. Narayana NR Murthy, Chairman of the Board of Infosys Technologies, Mr. Mohamad Sulaiman Hidayat, President of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mr. Janaka Perera, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Indonesia (from left to right).

Mr. Victor Fung, Chairman of Li & Fung Group, giving his presentation on how the public and private sector can work together to overcome impediments to development. He emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of public and social services.

Mr. Richard Sauer, Senior Director of the Microsoft Asia Pacific, and Mr. John Hewson, President of the John Hewson Group, were among speakers in Plenary I. Speakers emphasized that public-private partnerships should be based on shared principles, commitment, transparency, responsibility, accountability and absence of corruption.

Heads of States or Governments and Ministers of Pacific island developing countries discussing Pacific connectivity in Plenary II, which focused on public-private partnerships and telecommunications development. The importance of improving governance and strengthening the legal and financial environment in the region to develop and adopt information and communications technology was stressed.

Dinner with
the President

Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia, delivered his keynote address on "Managing development to diminish poverty" during the Dinner with the President session of the APBF. The President noted that the region needed more partnerships between government and the private sector in order to speed up regional economic development.
