Maritime Transport and Logistics

The world shipping and port industry has faced great and rapid changes. The continuing pace of technological change and the trend toward larger and faster ships is evident as shipping lines compete in seeking economies of scale in the global market. Developing countries in the region face a policy dilemma in ensuring access to competitive shipping services while promoting national shipping fleets and related interests.

Across the Asia and Pacific region some of the world's most modern container ships are calling at an extensive network of mainline and feeder ports. As global logistics becomes a worldwide trend, some leading ports have already transformed and expanded their functions and business activities to provide users with value added logistics services while other smaller ports in the region also have an important part to play in the total logistics chain.

In order to assist policy makers and the industry to keep abreast of developments in the maritime sector and make informed decisions, the secretariat shares the results of the studies undertaken, and conducts seminars and workshops from time to time.
