Operationalization of international intermodal transport corridors in
North-East and Central Asia

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is implementing a project on “Operationalization of international intermodal transport corridors in North-East and Central Asia”.

The main objectives of this project are to assist countries in identifying priority intermodal transport corridors, linking countries in North-East and Central Asia, and in establishing and implementing cooperative mechanisms such as Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) or steering committees for the development and operationalization of the selected corridors. The project will be implemented in two phases. The main activities of Phase 1 of the project is to identify and study proposed international transport corridors in North-East and Central Asia, and  organize a policy-level Expert Group Meeting (EGM) that reviews the status of the corridors and recommends three priority international intermodal transport corridors for further in depth study and operationalization in Phase II.

The project covers ten countries in North-East and Central Asia: namely China, Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Under the project following six intermodal transport corridors connecting North-East and Central Asia have been identified based on existing routes of the Asian Highway (AH) and the Trans-Asian Railway (TAR) and potential trade flow.
