Event on Least Developed Countries: Achieving the Millennium
Development Goals in the Least Developed Countries through
Regional Development Cooperation, Shanghai, 22 to 28 April
2004
The
sixtieth session of the Economic and Social Commission for
Asia and the Pacific was held in Shanghai, China, from 22
to 28 April 2004. During this session, the Economic and Social
Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Office of the
High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked
Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States jointly
organized a panel discussion. The panel discussion included
eminent experts from the region as well as representatives
from members and associate members of the Commission. In the
panel discussions, the experts (1) considered the progress
that needs to be achieved in the least developed countries
in order to ensure that Asia and the Pacific, as a region,
is able to attain the Millennium Development Goals by 2015;
and (2) identified measures that could be implemented through
regional development cooperation in order to ensure that these
countries reach the Millennium Development Goals.
