EXPERT GROUP MEETING ON GENDER STATISTICS AND THE USE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN INDICATORS IN SUPPORT OF THE CEDAW AND BEIJING PLATFORM FOR ACTION
1-3 October 2008, Bangkok

The Social Development Division’s Gender and Development Section and the Statistics Division of ESCAP are co-organizing an expert group meeting on gender statistics and the use of violence against women indicators in support of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and Beijing Platform for Action, to be held from 1 to 3 October 2008 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok. The expert group meeting will be attended by senior officials from national machineries for gender equality and women’s empowerment as well as national statistical offices of Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, the Philippines and Samoa. In addition, experts from the Republic of Korea and Thailand and UNDP and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community partners will be present.

Through this expert group meeting, ESCAP aims to promote ongoing collaboration between national statistical offices and national women’s machineries to develop and use statistics for appropriate policymaking, to reduce gaps in the implementation of both the CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action. The issue of violence against women will be particularly highlighted.

It has been repeatedly demonstrated that data is key to catalyzing and monitoring progress in the implementation of international mandates, including on gender equality, as well as to supporting country-level planning. It is expected that the expert group meeting will encourage national statistical offices and national women’s machineries to look into ways to further develop and use gender statistics - especially violence against women indicators - and determine appropriate methodologies for data collection and increase their use in policy formulation for implementation of gender equality commitments by member States.

The recommendations that will emerge from this expert meeting on appropriate regional and national strategies for promoting the implementation of the CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action will be disseminated to member States and partners of ESCAP.
