6. Conservation Areas Act

The objectives of the Conservation Areas Act are to provide for the preservation of both the natural environment and the natural cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea by:

  • The conservation of sites and areas having particular biological, geological, historic, scientific or cultural importance;
  • The management of those sites in accordance with the fourth national goal and its Directive Principles.

Any person or organization may recommend that an area be declared a conservation area. If the proposal is accepted, the site is placed on a register of conservation areas, thereby guaranteeing its official status. The objectives of the Act are very much in line with the aims and ideals of the fourth national goal, although they overlap with two other Acts, the Fauna Protection and Control Act and the National Parks Act.
