8. Environmental awareness camps
Environmental awareness camps (Enviro Camps) were organized to instil environmental awareness and create interest in the protection of the environment among secondary school students. Since its official launch in 1994, the Department of Environment has developed seven modules and organised 14 camps pertaining to highland, forest, river, marine and plantation ecosystems, and urbanization and organic farming ecosystems. The camps were conducted with the assistance of NGOs and higher institutions of learning, i.e., the World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia, the Malaysian Nation Society, the Centre for Environment, Technology and Development Malaysia, the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and Golden Hope Plantation (M) Bhd.
