3. Cocoa situation
Cocoa is mainly produced in the developing countries situated in the tropical regions. Africa, the traditional producer, accounts for about 60 per cent of the world supply followed by Central and South America at about 25 per cent. Production in recent years has been changing with the emergence of new producers in South-East Asia, such as Malaysia and Indonesia. In terms of production shares, Brazil, C^
te d'Ivoire, Brazil and Ghana have remained in the top three positions, respectively. Other major producers include Cameroon, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nigeria. Good weather, adoption of high technology and economic restructuring in the developing countries, especially in Africa, have greatly increased the world cocoa supply. The average annual growth rate over the past decade was recorded at 4.3 per cent. In recent years, world cocoa consumption has maintained an upward trend. The growth rate has, however, tended to be less than required to keep pace with production, despite the low prices.
