This section reviews the various forms of environmental legislation and the relevance to the integration of environmental concerns and development in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, including the related Acts, the modalities of implementation and measures for enforcement.

The Environmental Quality Act, 1974, is the main environmental act in Malaysia. It covers a wide range of environmental aspects. In addition, 33 separate elements of legislation exist which are directly or indirectly related to environmental management (table 2) (Abidin, 1997).
