3. Ecological design and sustainable suburban agriculture

The environment is an important factor which has considerable influence on agricultural sustainable development. Shenyang has made great progress in environmental improvement. For example, Shenyang developed environmentally friendly suburban agriculture comprising the following projects:

  • Baiqingzai village of Shujiatun district has developed small desolate valleys into fruit orchards, and has gained both ecological and economic benefits;
  • At the Xinhua ecological breeding farm of Shujiatun, chicken dung is used for pig feed; wastewater from the pigpens is discharged into the pond where the pig feed is produced, and then into the fish breeding pond. The sludge and water from the fish pool are used as fertilizer and irrigation water for grapevines and pear trees, thus forming a food chain for many kinds of products and enabling the resources to be used over and over in producing various food commodities (figure 18).
