3. Declining underground water level

Shenyang City mainly relies on underground water resources for its supplies. In the 330 km2 range of the municipal water sources, the required quantity of daily water increases year after year, and the area of pumping underground water is deepened and enlarged annually. In 1985 the pumping area was 238 km2. In the 140 km2 area of the central district of the city, the depth of pumping has been 36 m. There are 24 municipal water sources on the Hunhe River alluvial fan. In 1985, 503 million cu m3 of water was extracted for the municipal supply water. Continued excessive extraction from underground resources will exacerbate the lowering of the underground water level.
