A. Environmental quality in Shanghai

There is no hiding the fact that more attention should be paid to environmental pollution which is noise incompatible with the main chord of Shanghai's urbanization process. For two--thirds of the period of its urbanization, which has lasted for one and half centuries, Shanghai has suffered from colonization and war, bringing almost savage plundering which has been the main cause for the environmental pollution of the city. In the last 50 years, when modern industrialization gave Shanghai prosperity arid strength, the environmental pollution problems should not have continued to be pigeonholed. After the basic material life is assured, it is soon realized environmental pollution is not only a potential menace but also the biggest barrier toward sustainable development.
