2. Criteria for selection

It can be seen that, in Bangladesh, post-project economic performance can indicate the success of a project in limiting its environmental consequences, both internal and external. This indicator has thereby been broadly adopted in this study to present case studies of successful and unsuccessful projects. It needs to be emphasized here that this does not imply that economic analysis is necessarily an adequate indicator for assessing project feasibility at planning stage.

The selected case studies represent the following:

- most of the hydrological regions;

- types of projects such as full/partial protection, large or small;

- typical environmental consequences both off and on the projects; and

- typical causes of success and failure.

A total of 7 projects which include 3 successful projects and 4 unsuccessful projects have been selected. The locations of these projects are shown in Figure 13, and the principal features are presented in Table 12. The projects are briefly discussed below.
