Thailand: Preparing for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development
In preparation for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Royal Thai Government's National Environment Board (NEB) designated its National Commission on Sustainable Development (NCSD) as its national preparatory committee. The NCSD is chaired by the Chairman of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment and includes officials from the following government ministries and agencies: Ministries of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Public Health, Education, Transport and Communications, Commerce, and Industry. Representatives from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, National Economic and Social Development Board, National Energy Authority, Bureau of the Budget, Department of Regional Planning, Office of Environmental Policy and Planning, the Federation of Municipal Governments, Environmental Journalists Association, National Office of Women's Affaires, Federation of Thai Industries, academic and research institutes, NGOs and selected distinguished personalities.
The Commission holds regular meetings to assist in the preparation of Thailand's national sustainable development report. It also undertakes consultations with the public through multi-stakeholder consultations, and provides support to Thai NGOs to facilitate their registration with the Economic and Social Council of the UN.
