Strategic (area) environment assessments and their integration into planning

Strategic environment assessment is a tool that can be used to evaluate the relative economic, social and environmental merits of proposed policies, measures or programmes at the national level. The findings from a strategic environment assessment can be used to evaluate the overall costs and benefits of proposed economic policies and programs such as structural adjustment, financial liberalization, free trade, and foreign aid.

Sector (product) environment assessments

A sector (product) environmental assessment is used to evaluate the economic and environmental implications of a number of projects or policies in a given sector. The approach involves the ranking of these projects/policies using environmental criteria prior to prefeasibility assessment. The technique enables the decision makers to choose the best alternatives. This technique is widely used in the power and transport sectors.
