ELECTION OF THE GOVERNING BOARD OF THE REGIONAL
CO-ORDINATION CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
OF COARSE GRAINS, PULSES, ROOTS AND
TUBER CROPS IN THE HUMID TROPICS
OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

The Commission, at its fifty-sixth session held in June 2000, elected the seventh Governing Board of the Regional Co-ordination Centre for Research and Development of Coarse Grains, Pulses, Roots and Tuber Crops in the Humid Tropics of Asia and the Pacific (CGPRT Centre). The current Governing Board comprises the following 10 countries: Bangladesh, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In accordance with the Statute of the Centre, the three-year term of the present Governing Board members ends at this session of the Commission. The Commission will, therefore, elect the new members of the Governing Board of the CGPRT Centre during this session for the next three years.

The Statute of the Centre stipulates that the Governing Board shall consist of one representative nominated by the host country of the Centre, namely, Indonesia, and not less than eight representatives nominated by other members and associate members of ESCAP. The Governing Board members will be elected for a period of three years and shall be eligible for re-election. The cost of participation of the Governing Board members in all meetings of the Governing Board will be borne by the Governments concerned, as is the case with all legislative bodies of the Commission. To ensure continuity in the work of the Governing Board, elected member countries are expected to later designate one representative who would, as far as possible, serve on the Governing Board throughout the period of such membership.

To facilitate the election of the Governing Board during this Commission session, delegations are requested to inform the Secretary of the Commission, Mr. F.A. Uriarte, Jr., if their Governments desire to seek election to the Governing Board. A sample format for submission of nomination for election of the Governing Board is attached. The receipt of nominations will be closed at 12:00 hours on Tuesday, 22 April 2003.

Under the new arrangements for the fifty-ninth session of the Commission as announced by the Executive Secretary on 15 April 2003, the election of the members of the Governing Board of CGPRT will be held in the afternoon of Thursday, 24 April 2003 under agenda item 8 (a). Those delegations which have not yet informed the Secretary of the Commission of their desire to submit a nomination are urged to do so as early as possible.
