In light of the theme of the fifty-ninth Commission Session
“Integrating economic and social concerns, especially
HIV/AIDS, in meeting the needs of the region” a side
event entitled “Women and Men: Responding to the Challenges
of HIV/AIDS” is scheduled. The panel event will be
held on Wednesday, 3 September 2003 from 12:15–14:00
hours in Meeting Room G of the United Nations Conference
Center (UNCC). This event is hosted by the United Nations
Interagency Thematic Working Group on Women’s Empowerment
and Gender Equality. The main objectives of the panel event
are to highlight the gender dimensions of HIV/AIDS, and
to provide a forum to discuss strategies on how to combat
HIV/AIDS using a gender perspective.
At the panel, presentations will be made on :
- Women and HIV/AIDS – facts and figures
- Key gender issues of HIV/AIDS
- Strategies to combat HIV/AIDS focusing on the business
sector
- A community perspective
Following the presentations, there will be an interactive
Q& A session.
Participants
It is expected that the participants will be the Members
of the Delegation as well as participants from the Thematic
Working Group on Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality,
UN agencies, and NGOs from the community.
