MINISTERIAL ROUND TABLE

The Ministerial Round Table will be held on Tuesday, 2 September 2003 in two Parts as follows:


Part I
Focus: Theme topic of the 59th session entitled "Integrating economic and social concerns, especially HIV/AIDS, in meeting the needs of the region"
Venue: Conference Room 2, Level 2, UNCC
Time: 0900-1200 hours
0900-1000 hrs: Presentations and statements by:
- Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary of ESCAP.
- H.E. Mr. Festus G. Mogae, President of the Republic of Botswana: keynote address
- Dr. Nafis Sadik, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Asia, and representative of UNAIDS.
1000-1015 hrs: Tea break
1015-1200 hrs: Informal Q & A & discussion on the theme topic.
Moderator: Mr Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary, ESCAP
Format: Open interactive discussion.
Participants:

It is expected that participants would include Ministers/Heads of Delegation accompanied by two aides. Attendance by UN agencies, IGOs and NGOs will be limited to one representative only. Media representatives are welcome to attend. Special meeting badges for the Ministerial Round Table will be issued to delegations.

All delegations are encouraged to engage in lively interactive discussion. Any formal statements may please be confined to 5 minutes per delegation. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.


Part II
Focus: Discussions on the joint ESCAP-UNDP Report on "Promoting Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific: Meeting the challenges of poverty reduction"
Venue: Conference Room 4, Level 1, UNCC
Time: 1400-1500 hours
Presentations by: - Mr Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary, ESCAP
- Mr Hafiz Pasha, Assistant Administrator and Director, Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, UNDP, New York
Discussions by: Ministers/Heads of Delegations, followed by Q&A
Moderator: Mr Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary, ESCAP
Format: To enable the Ministerial Round Table to be thought provoking and interactive, the Ministers/Heads of Delegation are urged not to read out from prepared statements.
Participants: Part II of the Ministerial Round Table will be a closed informal meeting. Attendance will be restricted to member and associate members only to enable ministers/heads of delegation to freely share their experiences and exchange views on the MDGs issue.

Summary of discussions
A short summary of the Ministerial Round Table will be annexed to the annual report of Phase II of the fifty-ninth session. Free and frank exchange of ideas is encouraged, as no reference to country delegations in the text of the Summary will be made.
