Best practices of successful policies and programmes to prevent sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children and youth (2000) (XB)

 

Mandated by the Commission in resolution 53/4 of 30 April 1997 on elimination of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children and youth in Asia and the Pacific. The Government of Australia has provided funds for this activity to be implemented.

Training needs assessment of youth in countries affected by the regional economic crisis (2000) (RB/XB)

 

 

Baseline survey on youth health policies and programmes (2001) (XB)

The training needs assessment of youth in countries affected by the regional economic crisis is being undertaken as part of the series of country monographs on the situation of youth under output 3-2-308. Hence, it is proposed that this output be modified to a baseline survey on youth health policies and programmes, focusing on reproductive health, and substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention, in accordance with the recommendation of the Second Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on HRD for Youth, held in Bangkok from 1 to 5 June 1998.

HRD training module on the linkage between HIV/AIDS and sexual abuse and exploitation of children and youth (2000) (RB/XB)

 

In accordance with paragraph 3 (c) and 3 (d) of ESCAP resolution 53/4, and given the rising rate of HIV/AIDS infection particularly among commercial sex workers in the region, ESCAP is implementing this activity jointly with UNAIDS, which has provided ESCAP with funds for this activity.

To avoid duplication with work being undertaken by the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat). RB staff resources released will be redeployed for the implementation of the proposed new activity, 4-4-401.

Regional high-level meeting in preparation for Istanbul+5 (2000) (RB/XB) (120 participants)

 

In pursuance to GA resolution 53/180, a high-level meeting is proposed by ESCAP and the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (UNCHS) to review the regional progress made in implementing the outcome of Habitat II and to report the results of review to the Economic and Social Council. The Government of China has offered to host the meeting in Hangzhou, China in October 2000.

Project on community-based safety nets as tools for human development: the human dignity initiative (2000-2001) (RB/XB)

 

As recommended by the Committee on Socio-economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas, at its second session, concerning safety nets at the community level. Extrabudgetary funding has been secured from the Human Security Fund provided by the Government of Japan.

Although the dates of the Conference cover six working days from 31 August-5 September 2000, the actual Conference will consist of a three-day senior officials meeting (31 August-2 September 2000) and a two-day ministerial segment (4-5 September 2000). The ECOASIA meeting to be held on 3 September 2000 is not an ESCAP meeting. Therefore the total number of meetings should be 10.

To advise the members and associate members of the Commission on the progress made in the preparatory work for the Ministerial Conference, scheduled to be held in September 2000.

Pilot projects on space technology applications for natural resources management and natural disaster mitigation (1 in 2000, 4 in 2001) (RB/XB)

The pilot projects will be part of the Minimum Common Programme (MCP) being developed as follow-up to the Ministerial Conference on Space Applications, held at New Delhi in November 1999. A meeting of experts will be held at the end of March 2000 to discuss MCP. It is therefore envisaged that during 2000 only one pilot project will be implemented.

The Committee on Transport, Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development, at its second session, held in November 1999 requested the secretariat to convene this meeting in cooperation with the Asian Institute of Transport Development in 2000, within the ALTID project.
