The General Assembly, at its nineteenth special session (para. 121 of its report), asked for increased regional implementation of Agenda 21. The Ministerial Conference and the preparation of the report on the state of the environment would contribute to this. The Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development, at its first session held in October 1998, noted this modification.

The General Assembly, at its nineteenth special session, recommended continued activities on indicator development at the national level on a voluntary basis and exchange of information at the international and regional levels (paras. 114 and 115 of its report). The Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development, at its first session held in October 1998, noted this modification.

5-4-209 ESCAP HRD course for social work personnel dealing with sexually abused and sexually exploited youth in the Greater Mekong subregion (1999) (RB/XB)     ESCAP HRD course for social work personnel dealing with sexually abused and sexually exploited youth in the Greater Mekong subregion and South Asia (2 in 1999) (RB/XB) The Commission, in paragraph 3 (c) of its resolution 53/4 on the elimination of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children and youth in Asia and the Pacific, called upon the Executive Secretary to enhance the capabilities of social service and health personnel, through relevant gender-sensitive training, in assisting young victims and potential victims of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse in being rehabilitated into society. The addition of a subregional training course for South Asia would enable ESCAP to fulfil the mandate in the resolution more fully. The Committee on Socio-economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas, at its first session held in September 1998, endorsed this modification.

Promoting women's participation in economic development in Indo-China (1999) (RB/XB)

  The Commission, at its fifty-fourth session, expressed special concern that the recent economic problems in some countries of their region would have a negative impact on women and would burden them disproportionately, and urged that measures be taken to address that problem. The secretariat therefore proposes to disseminate the outcome of the meetings organized in 1996 under the Japan/UNDP-funded project on the promotion of women's participation in economic development, including the plans of action for women's economic participation in the Indo-China countries. The Committee on Socio-economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas, at its first session held in September 1998, endorsed this addition.

Promoting NGO- government collaboration in the implementation of the Jakarta Declaration and the Beijing Platform for Action in South Asia (1999) (RB/XB)

  The Commission, at its fifty-fourth session, requested the secretariat to promote the exchange of experience through the dissemination of information on special measures and better targeting of programmes for the rural and urban poor, as well as other disadvantaged and vulnerable social groups, including women. The secretariat proposes to disseminate the information gathered through the implementation of a project on promoting NGO-government collaboration in the implementation of the Jakarta Declaration and the Beijing Platform for Action in South Asia, with a view to introducing success stories of national-level non-governmental organizations reaching women in urban and rural areas. Handbook on the strengthening of women's information networks for Asia and the Pacific through computer networking (1999) (RB/XB)

  The Commission, at its fifty-fourth session, encouraged the secretariat to accord high priority to technical assistance activities, including group training. The secretariat proposes to produce a handbook, utilizing the outcome of the project on strengthening women's information networking for Asia and the Pacific through computer networking for the use of future group training and through the information activities of the Women's Information Network for Asia and the Pacific (WINAP). The Committee on Socio-economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas, at its first session held in September 1998, endorsed this addition.
